Intro to Rock Climbing

For those with little or no rock climbing experience and who want to gain the basic skills needed to climb inside and out. You will learn how to put on a harness, tie knots, belay and abseil.  Time permitting you will be introduced to placing protection, build anchors and setting up top & bottom ropes.

Course Aims
By the end of this course I hope that you will be able to do the basics – put on a helmet and harness, tie in to the rope, get to the top of a few climbs, be familiar with abseiling, belay your climbing partner and start to understand how to place gear and build your own anchors. By the end of the course you should have the skills to allow you to register at any indoor climbing wall.

Course Program

Day 1

  • Use of personal equipment, harness, helmet etc
  • Personal climbing & movement skills.
  • Introduction to basic rope work
  • Single pitch climbing
  • Abseiling.

 

Day 2 

  • Use of a guidebook & access information.
  • Look at placing gear and building anchors.
  • More climbing, belaying and abseiling.
  • Where to go next?

Indoor Climber to Outdoor Climber

This course is for people who have climbed indoors and want to progress onto real rock. You will learn how to set up top ropes, place protection, and build anchors.

This Course can be extended to 5 days, which will allow you to move onto multi-pitch routes.

 Course Aims

By the end of this course you may have lead your first rock climb! You will certainly have seconded a few single pitch routes, climbed on different rock types, learnt how to place natural gear and start to build anchors.

 

Course Program

Day 1

  • Use of guidebook. ‘Bomber’ gear placements.
  • Top and bottom rope set ups and belaying on single pitch crags.
  • Tying into anchors at the top of crags.
  • Lots of climbing

Day 2

  • More climbing
  • Building belays, setting up and managing an abseil.
  • Principles of a leader’s rack.

Multi Pitch Climber

This course is for those who can lead but haven’t yet ventured onto multi-pitch routes and want to know what its all about.  North Wales has a LOT of multi-pitch routes to choose from!  Route finding can be an issue on multi-pitch routes and we will have a look at this.

 

Course Aims

This will help you gain the skills to go it alone on multi-pitch routes.  Develop your skills in building safe and appropriate belays.

 

Course Program

Day 1

On your first multi-pitch route we will look at choosing a suitable route and route finding.

Placing gear, building and attaching to a belays.

Day 2

If you are a confident single pitch leader you might have a go at multi pitch leading. We will look at placing gear appropriate to protect the second as well as the leader, fundamental to multi-pitch climbing. We will also look at setting up an abseil retreat.

Previous Experience

You will have some previous outdoor lead climbing experience and you will be familiar with the basics.

Self Rescue

This is a course every climber should have been on, have you?  Do you know what to do when it all goes wrong? Could you get an injured partner off a cliff in safety? Learn the vital skills of self-rescue and have the confidence that you can deal with any situation.

 

Course Aims

This course will give you the skills and techniques needed to sort out issues from simple problems to full blown emergencies. Every climber should take this course!

 

Course Program

Day 1

  • Anticipating problems
  • Simple solutions for simple problems
  • Tying off a belay plate
  • Escaping the system
  • Use of Prussiks
  • Hoisting, lowering & abseiling

Day 2

Putting it into practice:

You’ll practice the above in a real rock-climbing situation!
